The new Minister of Veterans Affairs

Gregory Thompson

Thompson, the MP for New Brunswick Southwest, was first elected to the House of Commons in 1988, and was re-elected in 1997, 2000 and 2004. Most recently, Thompson served as official Opposition critic for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Prior to entering politics, Thompson worked as a financial planner, salesperson, and teacher. He has served as a member of the board of directors for Theatre New Brunswick, the New Brunswick Drug & Alcohol Dependency Commission, and the Charlotte County Hospital.

Originally opposed to the merger between the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservative party, Thompson was the first Member of Parliament to publicly support Harper over leadership candidates Belinda Stronach and Tony Clement.

Thompson holds bachelors degrees in arts and education from St. Thomas University.
